A regulated movement uses the traditional method of rate adjustment: a regulator index and a hairspring stud that let a watchmaker speed up or slow down the watch by shifting the effective length of the hairspring. This is the industry-standard architecture used by ETA, Seiko and most of the watchmaking world for decades. Its great practical advantage is serviceability — virtually any watchmaker anywhere can regulate and maintain it, quickly and cheaply. On a closed-caseback watch the movement is never seen anyway, which is why this configuration is the pick of many buyers of solid-back models.
A free-sprung balance has no regulator index at all. Rate adjustment is done with precision micro-screws or weights on the balance wheel itself. This is the architecture Rolex adopted for its in-house calibers, and it is what the genuine 3235/3285-class movements use. Removing the hairspring-stud interaction makes the rate more stable across positions and over time — the balance is less disturbed by shocks, and timing holds better as the mainspring winds down. The trade-off: servicing requires specialist tools and know-how, which is why free-sprung movements cost more at every level of the market.

Solid caseback models — GMT-Master II, Submariner, Sea-Dweller, Daytona and similar — hide the movement completely. If you will never see the caliber, the regulated version delivers the same look, same feel and dependable timekeeping for $150 less. That is why many closed-back buyers choose it.
Display caseback models and Rolex purists — if you want the exact genuine-style balance architecture under the glass, the visual fidelity of free-sprung finishing, the longer reserve and the best positional stability, take the free-sprung upgrade. It is the configuration that matches what Rolex actually builds today.

Is free-sprung automatically "better"? Mechanically yes — it is the architecture genuine Rolex uses and it holds rate more consistently. But "better" only matters if you can see the movement or push it hard; for a solid-back daily wearer the regulated version is the sensible value pick.
Can I upgrade after ordering? Before we source your watch for QC, yes — just reply to your confirmation email and we will adjust the total. Once QC photos are sent, the configuration is locked.
Is the free-sprung version harder to fix if something goes wrong? Servicing is more specialist, which is why the flagship movement carries a higher price. Both versions are covered by the same 2-year movement warranty.
